Today's blog starts out with my review of "The Fighter." The Fighter is a movie starring Mark Wahlberg, AKA Marky Mark of the former Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. The movie is based on the life and times of "Irish" Micky Ward, the lovable bruiser that slugged his way into the hearts of fight fans the world over with 3 amazing fights (great link due to awesome 80's music) against the late Arturo Gatti. The movie was pretty good. Christian Bale plays Dickey Ward, Micky's crack head brother who has a knack for jumping out of windows when his mother comes looking for him. Bale knocks this role out of the park...very unlike this. Amy Adams plays Micky's love interest Charlene and also does a pretty great job. I'd expect Bale and Adams to both be nominated for some sort of awards for their solid performances. Marky Mark...well not so much. Let me say, I really like Mark Wahlberg as an actor. the problem is, he's not very versatile. Here's a sampling of his work....The Happening...Shooter...The Departed...Boogie Nights...Renaissance Man. Ok, so I slipped an extra "The Happening" scene in there, just cuz I can! Anyhow, you get the point, he was fine in the movie, just not much different than those other guys he played.
The Texans smell so bad, they make right guard turn left. That is all. They are 5-9, and Gary Kubiak is going to be fired and replaced with either Bill Cowher or Ron Rivera. Oh, and there's this...so mad at the situation that they're fighting eachother.
While I'm writing this, Brett Favre got knocked out of the MNF game with a concussion. Bad move by the NFL to let them play that game in -1 degree weather, amounting to what equates to playing on concrete. Favre would be dumb to come back and try to play this season, but we all know Favre is dumb. Rmember, he sent nudie pics to a chick he was trying to score with while wearing crocs. (Yet again another opportunity to go dirty link with Favre I have refrained from. I'm so grown up now.)

Texans Monday Nighter, Streak Ends, Tripping Players and Other Miscellany
So we're pretty slammed at work right now. In just about an hour, the Texans will take on the Ravens on Monday Night Football. I freaking love Monday Night Football. It's the only game in town, (unless this happens) and an entire nation of football fans usually give a crap about the game, no matter who's playing. People in Houston kind of give a crap. The reason for that is because Houston is kind of a crap sports town. I grew up here, so I didn't really realize it back then, but having been back here in the Bayou City for a year and a few months as an adult, I can clearly see that this city has a good amount of really crappy fans. That may be because they have a good amount of crappy teams, but I was raised to be a fan of whatever team you root for through thick and thin, not just when the teams are winning. The cynicism in this city is unbelievable! I mean, that is just out of control...an entire website dedicated to convincing fans, who have ZERO control of anything, that their Head Coach should be fired. Anyhow, this town does have some good, non-fairweather fans, but sometimes it seems that the douchers outweigh the good ones.
Other big NFL news tonight, the venerable Brett Lorenzo Favre (I could have gone so much dirtier on that link, but that's not how I roll) will sit out of tonight's week 14 game against the Giants. Brett got crushed last week against the Bills and even after the aforementioned Metrodome roof collapse paved the way for the game to be pushed back a day, Favre couldn't get healthy enough to play tonight. With him sitting out, his streak of 297 consecutive games started comes to a close. This is an INSANE streak. 297 straight games in a league full of men who are out for blood every week is something I think we might not see again. Eli Manning will be making his 100th straight start tonight. Eli would have to start every game of the season until the year of our lord 2022 to match Brett Lorenzo's streak. This may sound strange and nonfactual, but playoff games aren't counted in the streak, making Brett's 321 game streak (including the postseason) that much more impressive.
Another NFL note; yesterday this happened in the Jets Dolphins game. What a stupid/unsportsmanlike/childish thing to do. This guy Sal Alosi happens to be the Jets strength and conditioning coach. He strengthened his douchebaggery with that move. Just now we heard that the Jets suspended him for the rest of the season and fined him $25K. Good. He deserves it. With this happening, my news director brought this gem from the 1954 Cotton Bowl between Alabama and Rice to my attention. This blew my mind! The absolute best part is how Tommy Lewis runs back to the bench and tries to hide, like he didn't just go on a freaking leg breaking mission. Thankfully, Dicky Maegle wasn't hurt, just had the wind knocked out of him.
So I guess that's about all I have to say today. I feel like it's kind of my niche to leave you with an amazingly hilarious video, so I give you this...
Oh, and I'll throw a Texans prediction in...Ravens 31 Texans 28.

So here goes a blog. I work in sports, and let's be honest, people have tons of opinions about everything sports. So I thought it my civic duty as someone who actually works in sports, to start a little blog where I can drop some of my infinite sports knowledge on all of you wannabes. Now don't take that as arrogance, take it as sarcasm. Believe me, I don't get much "inside info" or "scoops" at work. Mostly things like this happen and I get just about as much info as the average (or above average) ESPN watcher. So without further adieu, here is the Dennis Kelly Sports blog...
I guess people want to hear about things that are popular in the sports world right now, so we'll start with the most recent sports news, Urban Meyer's resignation from the University of Florida. Urb has been at UF for 6 seasons. In those 6 years, he racked up 2 natty's and put like 30 guys to the NFL. Anyhow, after a tough season, Urb is out. My guess is he'll get picked up by CBS and start doing some TV stuff with them. He'll be pretty good at it before getting the itch to coach again, and thusly return to coaching within a few years.
The Heisman: Cam Newton will win the Heisman only to have it taken away like you know who in a few years. Cammy Cam's pops took money for him to go to Auburn instead of Mississippi State...not unheard of, not crazy, just not allowed. I (sort of) played college football, and trust, it's a full-time job. I sucked, so imagine what life is like for the guys that are trying to get good enough to play in the NFL?!? These guys have to work 60 hours a week, in the gym, on the field, and in film/playbook study and then they have to go to school too (secondary for a lot of these guys.) It's hard to determine what the money range would be for crappy red shirt guys like me, and the guys like Cammy Cam, but I'm just saying I wouldn't be against some sort of pay for college athletes. I think Andrew Luck is a stud, who is deserving of the trophy, but you can't take the thing away from Cam if you don't have actual info that proves he was involved in the Good Reverend Cecil's "I need money" scheme.
Keith Fitzhugh: You may have never heard this name before, but you might not forget it after hearing this story. Presently, Keith has a job similar to Denzel's. Before he stopped explosive trains (Keith, not Denzel,) he did this. So the New York Jets offered Keith a free agent contract after suffering some unfortunate injuries to their secondary. Citing financial stability and family, Keith turned down the Jets offer. Ok, so I get it, the Jets job could have potentially been for just a few weeks, BUT...it could have also led to a freaking Super Bowl and a Super Bowl bonus of at least $85,000!!! Come on Keith, I understand the risks, but think of the rewards man...live a little. Having said that, I also respect his decision to be a rock for his family...and what if he got paralyzed and what if he broke his wrist and could never conduct a train again blah, blah, etc...So I leave you with this, just a hilarious video about Keith's current career...
